Effects of sediment influx on the settlement and survival of canopy-forming macrophytes

چکیده
Kelp forests on coastal rocky shores are negatively impacted by sudden sediment loads that can occur with storms and floods. Using laboratory experiments, we studied the effects of sediment deposition on the survival of the large brown alga Eisenia bicyclis juveniles (zoospores and gametophytes) to quantify the potential impacts of particulate matter on kelp forests. The zoospore adhesion rate and the gametophyte survival and growth rates all declined markedly with increasing sediment load, particularly with smaller particle diameter. Using experimental results, we derived an equation to calculate the rate of initial kelp depletion with sediment load based on the quantity and size distribution of sediment particles. The equation enabled the estimation of E. bicyclis depletion rates in the field by measurement of particle quantity and diameter distribution of sediments on the reef substrate.

PURPOSE: This technical note uses a modeling approach to examine the impacts of suspended sediment concentrations and current velocity on the persistence of submersed macrophytes in a shallow aquatic system. Studies were conducted on Peoria Lake, Illinois, spanning historical times when a meadow-forming species (Vallisneria americana) successively thrived and disappeared, and current times when...

The aim of this research is exploring the impact of changes in runoff and sediment of the upstream catchment on the changes in the area and amount of canopy in Gabric-Jask mangrove. Hence, hydro-climatological parameters including amount of precipitation, discharge, and sediment in Gabric catchment during the statistical period of 1993 to 2010 were selected and the annual standardized index rel...

Survival and settlement of Pocillopora damicornis larvae on hard surfaces covered with fine (<63 µm) terrigenous red clay was measured in laboratory Petri dishes. Coral larvae were incubated in the dishes for two weeks and the percent that settled on the bottom was determined. There was a statistically sig...
